The Internet Archive will allow our community to preserve fan-works in the form of custom content, player-made mods, and player generated characters and homes for the sake of posterity. While other attempts have been made to archive content in the community’s past, nothing has quite come close to what content archiving should look like. In several languages and spread across thousands of websites content created by fans is difficult to track. Some of this content is work by a single entity, the work of creators working together on a project, or a collective of artists showcasing their works on a site that specializes in hosting modded content. Some of this content in this collection was years in the making.
These works range from the simplest re-texturing mods to entire overhauls of games either in terms of mechanics, compatibility, or style. For that reason this player made content has become not only a part of video gaming history but cultural history as content created for The Sims gives us an example of the immense creative power behind transformative fan works. Several books have been written on the content that the community creates and the way that content is advertised, used, created, and dispersed. Our content creators often go on to become professionals in their field whose art transcends simply being “fan work”. In fact, content created for The Sims is so ubiquitous that it is often converted for use in other games. The community itself has produced more content than any other modding community in the history of gaming. The Sims community has put hundreds of thousands of hours into content creation over nearly twenty years.
